Spam Monitor's Address Lists screen allows you to add, edit or remove email and IP addresses to a Friends or Block List, which treats emails from such sources as either legitimate messages or spam, respectively.
To open the Address Lists screen, click the Manage Address Lists button on the Main Status screen or the Address Lists button on the left of Spam Monitor's screen.
The Address Lists screen consists of the following sections:
Friends List
The Spam Monitor Friends List contains a list of email and IP addresses which Spam Monitor always treats as legitimate, and never considers spam. Email and IP addresses can be added to this list, as well as modified or removed. You can also import your entire email address list from your email client application, providing the application is supported by Spam Monitor.
To open the Friends List screen, click Friends List on the Address Lists screen.
To import your email client application's email address list, click the Import button and follow the prompts. This Spam Monitor feature supports the following email clients:
- Outlook 97, 98, 2000, 2002 and 2003
- Outlook Express
- Mozilla Mail
- Eudora 6
To add an email address to the Friends List:
- Click the Add button.
- On the Add Entry dialog box, ensure Email is selected in the Type field and enter the email address to be added to the list.
- Click the OK button to add the email address to the Friends List.
To add an IP address or IP address range to the Friends List:
- Click the Add button.
- On the Add Entry dialog box, ensure IP is selected in the Type field and in the From field, enter the IP address to be added to the list. To make this entry represent a range of IP addresses, enter the upper range in the To field.
- Click the OK button to add the IP address or range of address to the Friends List.
To remove an email or IP address, or IP address range, select the appropriate entry from the Friends List and click the Remove button.
To modify an existing email or IP address, or IP address range:
- Select the appropriate entry from the list and click the Edit button.
- Update the entry on the Edit Entry dialog box. Note: An email address entry cannot be converted into an IP address or IP address range entry, and vice versa.
- Click the OK button to accept the change.
Block List
The Spam Monitor Block List contains a list of email and IP addresses which Spam Monitor always treats as spam. Email and IP addresses can be added to this list, as well as modified or removed.
To open the Block List screen, click Block List on the Address Lists screen.
To add an email address to the Block List:
- Click the Add button.
- On the Add Entry dialog box, ensure Email is selected in the Type field and enter the email address to be added to the list.
- Click the OK button to add the email address to the Block List.
To add an IP address or IP address range to the Block List:
- Click the Add button.
- On the Add Entry dialog box, ensure IP is selected in the Type field and in the From field, enter the IP address to be added to the list. To make this entry represent a range of IP addresses, enter the upper range in the To field.
- Click the OK button to add the IP address or range of address to the Block List.
To remove an email or IP address, or IP address range, select the appropriate entry from the Block List and click the Remove button.
To modify an existing email or IP address, or IP address range:
- Select the appropriate entry from the list and click the Edit button.
- Update the entry on the Edit Entry dialog box. Note: An email address entry cannot be converted into an IP address or IP address range entry, and vice versa.
- Click the OK button to accept the change.
Automatic Friends List
The Automatic Friends List contains a list of email addresses and the IP addresses of computers that send you messages on a frequent basis. Any email or IP addresses which appear in this list are always treated as legitimate, and not considered spam.
To open the Automatic Friends List screen, click Automatic Friends List on the Address Lists screen.
To allow the email addresses of individuals or organizations who send you messages on a frequent basis, select the Automatic Friends List for Email Addresses check box and set the following options:
- Number of days between clean emails before accepting Email addresses - email addresses of individuals or organisations who send you email messages more than once within the selected period of days are added automatically to the Automatic Friends List.
- Create a detail log file for each email address entry - select this check box to create a detailed entry in the email address log file whenever an email address is added to the Automatic Friends List.
To allow the IP addresses of computers that send you messages on a frequent basis, select the Automatic Friends List for IP Addresses check box and set the following options:
- Number of days between clean emails before accepting IP addresses - IP addresses of computers that send you email messages more than once within the selected period of days are added automatically to the Automatic Friends List.
- Create a detail log file for each IP address entry - select this check box to create a detailed entry in the IP address log file whenever an IP address is added to the Automatic Friends List.
The following buttons at the top of this screen have the following functions:
- Details - click this button to display the contents of the email or IP address log file.
- Remove - select an entry from this list and click this button to remove the entry from this list.
- Move to - select an entry from this list, click this button and select from the Friends List or Block List options on the resulting pop-up menu to move the entry to the Friends List or Block List, respectively. Note: Email and IP addresses in either the Automatic Friends List or Friends List are treated as legitimate by Spam Monitor. However, it is recommended that legitimate email and IP addresses be moved from the Automatic Friends List to the Friends List regularly to assist in the management of the Automatic Friends List.
- Hide Settings / Show Settings - click this button to hide or display the Automatic Friends List settings in the lower section of this screen, respectively.
