Software commonly refers to sets computer instructions that are packaged together to perform a specific task.
Software is what enables a computer to run, without it the computer would not have any instructions and would not be able to operate.
Software is usually divided into two main categories:
- Operating Systems - which provide the core instructions to allow a computer system to run. They also provide an interface for application software to run on top of them. For example Microsoft Windows is an operating system.
- Application Software - this is software runs on top of the operating system and is designed to perform a specific task. Tasks might include word processing or image manipulation or thousands of other uses. This category contains the major of software in use today.
