Unable to uninstall PC Tools Utilities Product

Symptoms:

Unable to uninstall PC Tools Utilities products

 

Causes:

PC Tools Utilities products uninstaller may have become corrupted.

 

Products Affected:

Performance Toolkit, Registry Mechanic, Privacy Guardian, File Recover

 

Troubleshooting:

Disclaimer: Modifying the registry can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. We cannot guarantee that problems resulting from modifications to the registry can be solved. Use the information provided at your own risk.

 

METHOD 1 - Reinstall and Uninstall

Step 1: Installation

  1. Download the appropriate PC Tools installation file from http://www.pctools.com/product/download/
  2. Run the downloaded file and follow prompts to finish installing the program.
  3. Restart your computer if prompted.

Step 2: Uninstall

Windows XP / Vista / 7

  1. Ensure that the application is not running.
  2. Uninstall of PC Tools Utilities Product from the Control panel or alternatively by following the instructions below:
    1. Click the Windows/Start Button
    2. Click on “All Programs” then select your PC Tools Utilities program
    3. Click “Uninstall PC Tools” Product

Windows 8

  1. Ensure that the application is not running.
  2. Press the "Windows" + "C" keys on the key board to ensure you are back at the Start Menu
  3. Right click on an empty space in the Start menu then select ’All Apps’
  4. You should now see PC Tools Utilities with several options.
  5. Select the "Uninstall PC Tools Utilities Icon to uninstall.

**IMPORTANT** Make sure that the PC Tools Utilities folder (which by default would be under ’C:Program FilesPC Tools’ for 32 bit and ’C:Program Files (x86)PC Tools’ for 64 bit) no longer exists. To check if the ’PC Tools Utilities folder still exists, please do the following:

  1. Open Windows Explorer by pressing the "Windows" + "E" keys on the key board
  2. Double-click the "C drive"
  3. Double-click "Program Files"
  4. Then double-click "PC Tools"
  5. If the PC Tools Utilities Folder still exists delete it.

If method 1 does not resolve your issue, please proceed to method 2.

 

METHOD 2 - Manual Uninstall

Step 1:  Delete PC Tools Utilities files

  1. Navigate to the following location in your computer

C:Program FilesPC Tools

  1. Right-click on the “PC Tools Utilities” folder and select “Delete”
  2. Navigate to the following location in your computer

C:Program FilesCommon FilesPC Tools

  1. Right-click on the "sMonitor" folder and select “Delete”
  2. Right-click on the "Shred" folder and select “Delete”
  3. Restart your computer

Step 2:  Delete PC Tools Utilities registry items

Delete the following three registry items.

HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwarePCToolsPC Tools Utilities

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREPCToolsPC Tools Utilities

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionUninstallPC Tools Utilities_is1

To do this, please follow the steps shown below exactly as they are shown.

  1. Restart your computer
  2. Select “Start” from Windows (you can also press "WIN" + "R" on your keyboard to launch the "Run" box)
  3. Select “Run”
  4. Copy and paste the following text in to the “Run” box and press “OK”

regedit

  1. Navigate to the following location within the "Registry Editor" window

HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwarePCTools

  1. Right-click on the "PC Tools Utilities"  folder and select "Delete"
  2. Navigate to the following location within the "Registry Editor" window

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREPCTools

  1. Right-click on the "PC Tools Utilities"  folder and select "Delete"
  2. Navigate to the following location within the "Registry Editor" window

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionUninstall

  1. Right-click on the "PC Tools Utilities_is1"  folder and select "Delete"
  2. Restart your computer
