Windows 7 'making headway' on internet security

Microsoft has not always enjoyed the plainest of sailing when it comes to the security of its various operating systems, but the software giant has made some steps in the right direction with the seventh iteration of Windows.
That is according to Chester Wisniewski, an expert from internet security company Sophos, who claimed that Windows 7 is moving in the right direction, but added that there is still room for improvement.
Writing on Graham Cluley's Sophos blog, the internet security expert suggested that Microsoft has taken a "serious look" at how users interact with the various levels of protection employed in its Windows platform.
Mr Wisniewski singled out the Windows Biometric Framework for praise, signalling the new technology as a "major step forward".
"Providing an integrated means of authenticating users using alternatives to traditional password-based methods is a welcome addition to the password only defaults in current editions of Windows," he said.
Currently in its release candidate, Windows 7 will ship in six different editions later this year, including Starter, Home Premium, Enterprise, and Ultimate.
