Website security is important, businesses advised

An online security expert has urged small businesses to take note of the fact that online security is no longer a secondary issue as far as their websites are concerned.

Internet security is as important as readiness and reliability especially when it comes to choosing a company to host a website, according to online security vendor Symantec.

Among the areas to pay particular attention to are data encryption, back up and server security, says chief scientist Guy Bunker.

He said: "Uptime is very important, but so is their DR [disaster recovery] plan. You need to know if the solution offered can swap over to a second location in the case of a server or network failure.

"The other thing that is now important is to ask what their data protection policy is. If it is a shopping site, then it will contain sensitive customer details which need to be protected at all times."

According to Netcraft, an internet services company that measures response times of the fifty leading hosting providers' sites, Verio is the most reliable hosting company site followed by Tiscali.
