Web users urged to be wary of fraud
The internet is a useful tool but it does expose consumers to scam artists keen to steal from them and commit identity theft, an expert has warned.
Arlene Karidis, writing for online resource the Frederick News Post, warned that trusting shoppers run the risk of being targeted by "scam artists" in phishing attacks designed to steal information.
Furthermore, cybercriminals have an increasing array of tools at their disposal, she continued.
"Viruses can be planted in computers that hijack victims' web browsers, taking them to a fake copy of the site. Trojan horses are hidden programs unloaded to allow unauthorised access to users' computers," Ms Karidis noted.
Trojans are often disguised as useful software, she added.
According to the US National Cyber Security Alliance, 71 per cent of American consumers do not understand the rapidly developing botnet threat to their machines.
It suggested that the finding is "alarming" as botnets are increasingly popular as a means of spreading malware and committing identity theft.
