Viruses 'often disguised as attachments'
Many viruses are disguised as attachments containing greeting cards or files, it has been stated.
A post on the OnTechNews blog has urged recipients not to open email attachments unless they know who it is from and are expecting to receive the message.
It explained that this rule is also relevant when people are trying to transfer files through online messenger services as these too can contain malicious software.
The blog urged PC users to install anti-virus software and make sure it is always kept up to date.
"Ensure that your operating system is up to date and patched with the latest security updates," it recommended.
Furthermore, it is important to install a firewall as well to fully protect a machine from all online threats, OnTechNews concluded.
Recently, an article posted on the website Net-Security.org suggested that a dedicated firewall was necessary to prevent system intrusions and other online threats.
