Virus hit "within minutes"
A computing expert has spoken of his carelessness in connecting his machine to a public wireless network while his firewall was disabled.
Industry commentator Bryan Betts made his comments to online resource Techworld, explaining that a virus attacked his machine "within minutes".
A firewall is a hardware or software security solution which enforces a computer's security policies and prevents unauthorised users from accessing the machine through either a network or the internet.
He had turned his computer's personal firewall off to synchronise files between his laptop and another machine and then forgot to turn it back on before connecting.
"Those few minutes of network connection had left at least a dozen files on my laptop that I didn't like the look of and four of them were already running," Mr Betts explained.
He was also concerned that they refused to be turned off using Windows Task Manager.
Mr Betts explained that he was fortunate his anti-virus software scans identified and erased the threat.
