'Users' responsibility' to protect PCs
Just over half of the people who took part in a recent survey believe computer security should be the responsibility of the user in terms of protecting their machine from viruses.
Online information resource Virus Bulletin questioned its visitors and discovered 31 per cent feel the software developers should make sure their products are "sufficiently robust" from the start.
It called for law agencies and governments to work with developers and the security industry to a greater degree in order to further limit the online threats home PC users face.
However, the publication also noted that "without arming end-users with the relevant information in a format that is clear and accessible to all, there will always be a hole in the loop".
If one person on a network contracts a virus, they can spread it to other machines within seconds.
Such malicious software can use a person's computer to send spam or launch virus attacks against further PCs.
