US web users hit with phishing scam
PC users in the US are being targeted by an elaborate phishing scam which purports to be from the Better Business Bureau (BBB), it has been reported.
Emails which actually contain malicious software - such as viruses - are being sent to both consumers and companies, claiming that the recipient is the subject of a complaint which has been filed with the bureau.
It offers them the chance to download documents it claims relate to the case but then infects the computer with a virus.
Furthermore, should victims click on the enclosed link, it takes them to a website which entices them to deliver sensitive information such as logins and passwords.
Although the phishing email is being spread rapidly at the moment, Ken Vander Meeden, president of the BBB in Western Michigan, warned consumers of the threat as early as last year.
He commented: "We will be forwarding all emails received to US authorities in hopes of actually catching those behind this fake email message before more damage is done."
