US pharmacy firm warns members of ID theft
One of the largest pharmacy benefit management companies in North America, Express Scripts has revealed that a cyber crook may have compromised its internet security and stolen patient data.
The company, which deals with millions of prescriptions for US patients, has revealed that a cyber crook is trying to extort money from the firm by threatening to expose millions of its patients' records.
A letter was sent to the organisation with personal details of 75 of its members, which included their names, dates of birth, social security numbers and even prescription information, the company said.
"We have been conducting a thorough investigation since we received this threat and we are taking it very seriously," said George Paz, chairman and chief executive officer.
"We are cooperating with the FBI and are committed to doing what we can to protect our members' personal information and to track down the person or persons responsible for this criminal act."
Members of the company are being contacted and warned to take steps to prevent possible ID theft.
