US halts plans for super cyber security body
Plans for an elite unit to protect the US cyber space from online threats posed by cyber crooks and foreign governments have reportedly been put on hold.
The plans for the US military Cyber Command division have been shelved for the time being while the government defines the body's parameters, according to nextgov.
The body, whose responsibility is to "secure our nation by employing world-class cyberspace capabilities" according to its website, planned to have a presence across all the 50 states.
According to an excerpt from an internal email said to belong to the US Air Force, which nextgov has published, "transfers of manpower and resources, including activation and reassignment of units, shall be halted".
The move comes in the wake of claims earlier in the week that Russian hackers compromised Georgian websites as part of the attack that had been launched by the Russian government.
As e governance and e commerce grows, online security is increasingly becoming a part of many governments' security priorities.
