US government contractor warns employees of ID theft
US government contractor SRA International has been writing to employees warning them of the possibility of ID theft after its internet security was compromised by malware.
The organisation started notifying employees after discovering the internet security breach that left the firm red-faced, as it specialises in providing cyber security and privacy services to the US federal government.
A network server used for storing data of thousands of employees including names, addresses and dates of birth, health information and social security numbers is said to have been infected by the malware.
The firm is now offering its employees a credit monitoring service "as a precautionary measure" in order to identify if any have become victims of ID theft.
Last month the US was named as the biggest distributor of viruses by managed security firm Network Box, which placed South Korea in second place.
However, the firm stated that Korea and Brazil "are clearly the ones to watch in 2009".
