US biggest global malware host, study shows
The US has been found to be the biggest malware hosting country in the world in a new report.
A report by Sophos into the first six months of cybercrime for 2009 found that 22.5 million different samples of malware have been discovered, almost double the level of June 2008.
The study found the US is responsible for hosting 39.6 per cent of all global malware.
China had been responsible for over 50 per cent in 2007, however its contribution has dropped to 14.7 per cent today.
Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant at Sophos, said cybercriminals are now targeting social network websites.
He added: "The honeymoon period of these sites is over, and personally identifiable information is at risk as a result of by constant attacks that the websites are simply not mature enough to protect against."
A separate report found that the US is responsible for one in six spam emails globally.
