UK vulnerable to cyber crime
A government minister has warned that the UK is more vulnerable to attacks from hackers and cyber terrorists now that internet use in the government had increased.
According to security minister Lord West, "there are a large number of attacks" though he refused to give anymore details of who or what had been attacked, citing national security.
"There is no doubt that as we become more interconnected as we are in terms of links to the internet, webs, and so on, we become more vulnerable," he told the House of Lords.
"Such attacks involve unauthorised access to computers and networks, with the intent of stealing data or disrupting services."
He said the issue of cyber security and e-security was big on the international stage with the topic being discussed at the G8, which "sponsors the Meridian process, where we discuss all these issues".
The government earlier this year said the nature of online threats has changed over the last few years and confirmed steps had been taken to secure the UK against such cyber attacks.
