UK sites 'increasingly infected by malware'

British-based websites are increasingly being infected by harmful malware, a new report has warned.

Coming just days after it was reported that users of Microsoft's Internet Explorer could be at risk of having their personal information and passwords hijacked by online criminals, fresh research by Sophos has revealed that a new webpage is infected worldwide every 4.5 seconds.

What's more, in the firm's 2009 security report, it has also been claimed that the proportion of UK web pages that are infected has doubled over the past 12 months from 0.8 per cent to a current level of 1.7 per cent.

Commenting on the findings, Graham Cluley, a senior technology consultant at Sophos, stated: "The fact that it [the UK] responsible for an increasing percentage of infected sites is worrying news.

"With web threats still on the rise, not only must website owners take a proactive approach to securing their sites, but all users browsing the internet should also take steps to protect themselves."

Similarly, Cisco's annual online security report has warned that online threats are becoming increasingly sophisticated as criminals become even more professional.
