UK marks Get Safe Online Week
This week is Get Safe Online Week and internet users in the UK are being urged to take the necessary steps to safeguard their online security.
According to internet security experts at GetSafeOnline.org, avoiding being victim to ID theft is especially important as each identity is worth thousands to cyber crooks and they would exploit it as much as possible before moving on.
"The internet is a great place to be," says Tony Neate, managing director of GetSafeOnline.org. "We are actively encouraging more people to go online, but in doing so, to ensure that they are safe and secure.
"We want to draw attention to the fact that online criminal activity can be a sophisticated business, but that each of us can take steps to prevent ourselves from becoming a victim."
According to data from the organisation, 85 per cent of UK consumers have some form of anti-virus software, though almost half (48 per cent) are still not updating their software.
