Twitter hit by spam attacks

A new virus has made its way onto social networking website Twitter.
The micro-blogging site is the latest to be used by spammers to spread their malicious code.
Malware contained in spam messages on the network has the potential to take control of Windows-based machines for illegal purposes.
The message claims to be from a group that a user's friends have already signed up to and encourages them to click on a link. However, the contained zip file is in fact infected.
Kevin Haley, director of Symantec's security response division, said that the attack is a new "social-engineering trick" and the code contained within the zip file is a variant on the Ackantta worm, which was discovered in February of this year.
He claimed that the attack is generally ineffectual, but users who do open the file risk having their internet security breached and their personal details stolen.
Meanwhile, a new Koobface virus, targeting Facebook users, was uncovered last week.
