Town loses thousands of dollars to cyber crooks
A town in the US has been left smarting after a cyber crook managed to compromise the town treasurer's internet security and made away with thousands of dollars.
Sandwich treasurer Craig Mayen's computer was reportedly attacked using a key logger, which revealed all his information including passwords to a hacker that eventually made away with $50,000 (£32,000).
According to the Boston Globe, withdrawals were made from the town's bank accounts using the treasurer's data and transferred to three accounts across the US.
Police Chief Michael Miller said the theft, which was discovered two weeks ago was too complex for local authorities who are ill equipped to deal with such cases.
"That's the problem with tracking all this stuff, we don't have that ability," he said. "At this point, it's outside our realm of expertise."
A man who reportedly opened one of the accounts which some of the stolen funds were transferred to has been found not to be criminally involved in the syndicate.
