Three in four UK consumers afraid of ID theft
New figures show that nearly three in four (72 per cent) of UK consumers believe the financial crisis has put them at greater risk of being exposed to ID theft.
According to the latest Unisys security index, which examines how safe people feel, some 88 per cent of UK consumers fear other people may obtain and use their credit card, debit card or bank account data.
Online security concerns in the UK have prompted the Unisys security index for the country to jump 20 per cent to 150 from just 125 a year ago.
Commenting on the findings, Unisys' vice president of global security solutions Neil Fisher said the UK must not lose focus when it comes to keeping customers safe and protected.
"Robust security procedures to protect against online fraud and ID theft are crucial to ensuring customer confidence, particularly with regards to online shopping and banking," he stated.
Last year fraud losses on UK debit and credit cards jumped by 14 per cent to £609 million, according to data from the payments association APACS.
