Thousands of sites 'hacked and transmitting malware'
More than 10,000 websites have been hacked and changed to redirect users to websites "laden with a malware cocktail", it has been reported.
The pages have been filled with code which redirects users to a site which seeks to break into their machines, online resource SecurityPark.net noted.
It used the situation to remind users that even websites they trust can contain malware, adding that the compromised pages include travel and hobby sites as well as government information pages.
"The redirect and the attempted break-ins all happen unbeknownst to the web surfer," the online resource continued.
Recently, search engine giant Google conducted research which revealed that one in ten websites could be downloading malware such as Trojans onto a user's computer.
It warned that such malware could be used to steal information from users, potentially compromising sensitive information such as email addresses or even banking passwords.
