The folly of modern technology

Advances in technology have granted millions access to the internet with platforms that have created a society which like any, has criminal elements.

ZDNet lists some of these platforms in an article highlighting broadband connectivity and Wi-Fi networking as technologies that have made it possible for round the clock connectivity and wireless networking.

However with longer connectivity comes longer exposure to hackers and cyber crooks that also have easier access to wireless-enabled laptops whose signals can be intercepted easily.

Other technologies include removable appliances, which are easy to lose, email and instant messaging, which hackers use for scamming and ID theft and peer-to-peer networks, which can be used for spreading malware.

And despite e-commerce and online banking making many consumers' lives easy, they have also created a platform for crooks to access financial information and steal money.

Consumers are advised not to shun the technologies, but to be vigilant and ensure adequate online security is in place.

"Most cyber criminals are like most other predators: they go for the easy kills," the article concludes.
