Technology and good practices vital for avoiding online threats
Internet users need to combine both technological measures such as internet security software and a keen eye to prevent them from falling victim to online threats posed by hackers, an expert has stated.
Common sense among consumers is vital when it comes to spotting attack attempts by hackers such as phishing and other social engineering scams, according David Emms, senior technology consultant at online security firm Kaspersky.
"Don't use the same password for Facebook and MySpace and your bank and eBay and all these things because potentially if someone gets the key for one door they could open every other door with it so to speak," he said.
He went on to say that consumers should not only ensure their machines have security programmes such as anti-virus software, but they should also take advantage of all patches that are issued.
Internet users are also advised to avoid responding or even opening unsolicited emails as some of them may contain a virus, which can open a backdoor for hackers to strike.
