Student stung by phishing fraudsters

Students in California are being hit by a new phishing attack which sends emails purporting to be from their university, it has been reported.

The University of California, Los Angeles is being targeted with a carefully designed phishing attack, which is uniquely created to appear to be official university messages, the Daily Bruin reports.

Ross Bollens, director of IT security at the seat of learning, described the honed assault as "spear phishing", a term used to describe a carefully targeted assault rather than a mass mailing.

"Technologically there's nothing we can do. They're coming from everywhere, masquerading as everything," he told the publication.

Recently, the Boston Herald reported that the server of Harvard University Graduate School of Arts and Sciences had been hacked and student details stolen.

It noted that candidate names, email addresses and phone numbers, as well as their test results and dates of birth, had been compromised, sparking fears of identity theft.
