Strong, multiple passwords and online security software recommended

The need for proper online security measures and good practice has been highlighted by a UK internet security solutions provider, who has claimed that virtually all data attacks come through the web.

According to Roger Thompson, the chief research officer at AVG Technologies, people need to have strong, multiple passwords as well as regularly updated anti-virus software on their computers.

"People need to understand that 99 per cent of all attacks now come via the web, and that the goal of all these attacks is to steal someone’s identity, not to mention their bank accounts and credit cards," he explained.

Having more than one password will ensure that "if one account gets phished, they only lose one password, not the keys to the kingdom", he added, recommending dedicated web scanning as well as ID theft protection software.

Earlier this year the Office of Fair Trading published a report highlighting the three most common e-mail scams as phishing, bogus foreign lotteries and advance fee scams.
