Spyware 'can earn criminals big cash'

Spyware allows both commercial and personal information to be gleaned from a user's PC and can potentially be used by a number of groups, including criminals, companies and data-mining firms, an expert has asserted.

Peter Daley, writer of the Daily's regular Techno File blog, warned in a recent post that spyware can make "big money" for its perpetrators.

More aggressive programs can even collect online banking information and credit card details, he warned.

"Spyware can also be used to open doorways to allow much more malicious programs, viruses or rootkits into your commercial or private internet-connected computer," Mr Daley explained.

He added that this makes it vital for PC users to protect themselves by regularly scanning their machines for such security threats.

In 2002, the Gibson Research Corporation asserted that any program which employs a computer's web connection without the user's permission is a piece of spyware and therefore guilty of information theft.
