Software downloads 'can carry malware'
PC users in Australia have been warned that they can often be tricked into installing and running malware on their systems as they access software such as video codecs.
IT professionals resource Secure Computing magazine has highlighted that the rapidly increasing popularity of websites such as YouTube make it likely that many users have some form of malicious program on their systems.
The article stated that the two main objectives of hackers and malicious programmers are to steal confidential information and to turn the machine into a bot - allowing the criminal to use it to attack still more computers.
Australia's Institute of Criminology warns that sometimes machines can be infected by spyware and adware programs which may not seem initially to be as dangerous as more obviously malicious files.
However, it adds, these programs can sometimes conceal more problematic pieces of malware or even access and steal sensitive information.
