Social networks 'hit with phishing scam'
Social network-fans in India have been warned of a new phishing scam which exploits the popularity of Facebook to hijack account details.
News resource Tech Tree has warned PC users that a new online threat uses their addiction to Facebook to gain personal information - and warned that the message is "spreading like a virus".
The email purports to be from an acquaintance and claims they have changed their profile, providing a link which appears to take the recipient to the social networking site so they can log in and add their friend's new details, it noted.
However, instead of linking to the legitimate website, it transports them to an alternative page which looks the same, thus capturing their log in details, Tech Tree continued.
It added: "The perpetrators of such scams have often used user information to spread the scam to accounts linked to the hacked accounts or simply spread nauseous content."
According to IT Pro, Facebook was recently hacked, allowing a technician to access private pictures of a number of celebrities.
