Social networking sites under attack as crooks step up pressure
Cyber crooks are stepping up social engineering exploits and increasingly targeting social networking websites in a bid to expose them to online threats and steal their personal data, it has been stated.
This time members of social networking site hi5 are in the cross hairs of the crooks, who are currently running a phishing campaign by asking members for friendship.
Well crafted spam emails arrive in users' inboxes urging members to reject or accept the request and depending on how one responds, they may be exposed to online threats, warns Trend Micro.
"The only thing one gets by accepting that friend is loss of Hi5 credentials," says the online security firm, which warns that the link to Accept Friend leads users not to a profile but a malicious site instead.
Fake profiles used for spam advertisement purposes targeting BeBo, a social networking site widely used in the US and the UK were also reported a few months back.
