Skype 'withdrew video sharing feature' after bug discovery
Online telephony provider Skype blocked a video sharing feature of its software after it was revealed it could be misused by hackers, it has been reported.
The firm moved to turn of the feature after it was revealed that it could he hijacked and used to launch a self-copying worm attack against Skype users, according to security researchers cited by PC World.
The bug which enables this to be done was first brought to the attention of the public by security researcher Aviv Raff.
Mr Raff said that the bug has arisen as a result of the way Skype employs a feature of Internet Explorer to render HTML.
Skype appeared to acknowledge the problem but has not confirmed whether the discovery of the bug had prompted it to withdraw the feature but a statement did make reference to "security concerns".
The statement added: "Our brightest engineers are rattling their wrenches to make things all right and bring the beloved videos back. Soon."
