Single family of Trojans responsible for 60 per cent of malware
New figures have indicated that a single trojan was responsible for almost three quarters of all the malware attacks recorded in the month of September.
According to research from online security firm Fortinet, the RogueSecurity trojan and its variants were responsible for 61.5 per cent of the online threats for the month taking all the top four malware spots.
"Not since the start of this year when the notorious Storm virus made a continuous run of devastating attacks has any comparison been seen with this level of activity," said Fortinet.
"However, where the Rogue security applications excel is the accumulated volume, maintaining these extreme levels of activity for at least six days, not to mention the other variants."
According to the internet security expert, the second and third week of September was the most dangerous as the bulk of malware activity was recorded during this period.
The figures come amid revelations from the Association for Payment Clearing Services that online banking fraud losses have risen by almost 200 per cent this year.
