Service providers urged to evolve with hackers
An online security expert has warned that internet service providers are exposing users to the risk of online threats continuing to ignore sophisticated virus propagation techniques.
According to Cloudmark, a carrier-grade messaging security organisation, cyber crooks have advanced beyond traditional tactics and are now employing hybrid attacks that combine elements of both spam and viruses.
Gone are the days when hackers relied on sending messages with virus executables attached or virus-infected documents as cyber crooks now entice people by embedding links in informative or advertising e-mails.
Following links in these messages leads to users ending up on websites with that host malware, which maybe a virus, worm or trojan.
"Companies that fail to address the problem of outdated anti-virus solutions are inadvertently enabling the spread of spambots and botnets," said Jamie de Guerre, of Cloudmark.
"As the virus, phishing and spam industries merge into a single economy; the only truly effective messaging security solution is one capable of combating existing and future threats simultaneously."
