Send a hacker to catch a hacker
Hackers in the US are to play a new role in internet security, thanks to efforts by authorities and industry players to set a new online security operating code, Federal Times reports.
In a case of send a thief to catch a thief, a team of experts is working on recommendations that will encourage US authorities to work more with hackers to identify how they breach federal systems.
According to Alan Paller, director of computer research centre SANS Institute in Maryland, the move is aimed at enabling computer forensics experts to learn about federal systems vulnerabilities.
"We're trying to secure systems, rather than secure compliance," he said. "If you know how [hackers] are getting in, you'd have to be crazy not to use your resources to stop that. But people are too focused on compliance."
A similar exercise by the US Air Force discovered that 80 per cent of vulnerabilities were a result of improper software configuration.
