Security should not be compromised by cost cutting

The recession is causing many firms to reassess their security costs, but businesses should not compromise their security for the sake of saving a few pounds – especially when phishing, spam and virus attacks are on the increase.

According to Computing News, there are many steps that firms can take to cut the cost of online security.

Increased web-filtering is one of the top ways of reducing the chance of becoming a victim of phishing, according to the news provider, without pushing up costs.

Meanwhile, installing the right anti-virus software is essential to ensuring security is maintained while reducing the impact it has on system resources.

"Using efficient low footprint anti-virus extends the life of PCs and laptops," the website states.

According to payment association APACS, the proliferation of anti-spam software has not decreased the number of phishing emails sent every year, which it claims is "comfortably into the tens of billions".
