Security checks and regular updates can help keep threats at bay
Internet users have been advised to ensure their internet security software is constantly updated and they should run regular health checks in order to prevent falling victim to online threats.
The web is full of online security threats and this year is set to witness even more, ranging from ID theft and phishing scams to viruses and spyware designed to steal sensitive information.
According to Jennifer Perry, the managing director of E-Victims, which helps people affected by online crime, people are under attack anytime they are on the internet, the Guardian reports.
"There is not an aspect of going on the web that's not a potential threat, whether you are emailing, using social networks or just surfing the web without clicking on anything," she says.
Social engineering scams such as the Nigerian advance fee rip-offs, job-related swindles, fake websites, holiday, ticket and economy exploitation scams are all going to be seen the year, says the newspaper.
