Russian and Georgia: cyber crooks join the war
Russian hackers have reportedly joined the fray between Russia and Goergia in South Ossetia by deploying their own weapons against Georgia, reports ninemsn.com.
The hackers have reportedly launched sustained cyber attacks on Georgian government websites, notably the website for parliament and that of Georgia's president.
In the attacks, Georgia's president has been depicted as a Nazi and likened to Adolf Hitler through insertion of pictures of the former German dictator next to his images.
Further attacks have also been directed at Georgia's commercial internet providers, according to the Washington Post and online security experts warn that this may escalate.
"If they can control government computers then they can probably do quite a bit more," said internet security expert Paul Watters, from Ballarat University's Internet Commerce Security Laboratory.
The source of the attacks or the cyber crooks' identity is not clear yet but it is suspected that Russia's notorious cyber-criminal underground may behind them.
