Rootkit threat warning issued

Sometimes a computer's performance may slow dramatically despite the computer being protected by anti-virus software, anti-spyware programs and a firewall, a commentator has warned.

Azwan Asmat, the author of Chuang Computer Tips, made his comments to online resource Go Articles, noting that many people are unaware of the rootkit infection threat to their PCs.

Rootkit infections "can also disable your firewall, anti-virus and anti-spyware and this will enable it to install malware or spyware in your computer", he warned.

They can conceal such malware or virus infections from the PC's security system, Mr Asmat added.

Recently, a rootkit concealed by pro-Tibet images has been spreading across the web, concealed within an email attachment titled RaceForTibet.exe, which shows a Chinese Olympic competitor being ridiculed.

The infection allows the creator to access victims' keystrokes, meaning potentially sensitive information can be stolen.

Such an infection could considerably increase a person's chances of suffering identity theft.
