'Research firm' before buying online
Shoppers considering going online to buy their loved one a present this Valentine should ensure they are protected from identity thieves and hackers, an expert has urged.
Frank Dorman, a spokesman for the US federal trade commission (FTC), made his comments to the Augusta Chronicle, suggesting consumers only buy from organisations they trust.
Buyers can research a firm by checking online review websites and reading the company's privacy policy, he continued.
He urged shoppers to: "Install anti-virus or anti-spyware software and a firewall. These tools provide information such as whether websites are phishing sites or distribute spyware but they must be updated regularly," the publication reported.
Just before Christmas, the FTC suggested those using the internet to avoid the high street crowds consider shopping with a credit card.
This provides some extra protection as, if details are stolen, there is a limit as to how much the consumer can be held liable for, it explained.
