'Rapidly changing' online threats
The security threats affecting home PCs have "altered dramatically" over the last few years, an expert has stated.
Industry commentator Ian Kilpatrick told British technology resource IT Wales that some older firewalls are now out of date and could fail to protect the machine on which they are installed.
He explained that a firewall is necessary to protect a private machine from potentially malicious online threats.
"You need a firewall to protect your confidential information from those not authorised to access it and to protect against malicious users and accidents that originate outside your network," Mr Kilpatrick continued.
However, he also added that even an up-to-date firewall cannot protect a machine from malware such as viruses, worms and spyware if the user opens unknown email attachments and links.
The BBC explains that a firewall "simply" prevents anything the user is unaware of passing information between the computer and the internet.
However, it urged people to ensure their software is up to date as this can add additional protection from recently developed online threats.
