QuickTime security 'improved'
Apple has released an update for its QuickTime player that it claims will help to protect users' computers from malware and computer viruses.
The company claims that the new QuickTime 7.6 software is more reliable and compatible.
Apple has a policy of not disclosing the nature or severity of threats to its software until the appropriate patches are released and an investigation conducted.
However, the software firm claims that the new update prevents an unexpected application termination by performing an additional validation of RTSP URLs.
The original problem was spotted by Attila Suszter, who reported the issue.
Apple's new QuickTime update can be downloaded from the company website and is compatible with Mac OS, Tiger, Leopard and Windows Vista operating systems.
A recent ESET Global Threat Report revealed that Windows autorun facility carried out a total of 8.3 per cent of virus attacks on ten million machines monitored in 2008.
Malware that steals computer gaming passwords was the most common virus attack, occurring on 10.78 per cent of machines.
