Protecting email communications vital in 2009
Securing email communications is one of the internet security measures that consumers should be concentrating on in 2009, an online security expert has advised.
This and ensuring proper internet security software is installed in machines is recommended, due to the fact that approximately 2,000 new and mutated viruses target users every day.
According to security firm BitDefender's latest E-Threats Landscape Report, internet users were exposed to nearly 50,000 phishing attempts per month and faced some one million hijacked computers spread online threats in 2008.
Commenting on the data, focusing on the last six months of 2008, Bogdan Dumitru, BitDefender's chief technology officer, said the report is aimed at helping consumers combat security threats with useful information.
"For example, nearly 45 percent of the e-threats in the wild in 2008 were distributed via e-mail. With this in mind, consumers should make securing e-mail communication a priority in 2009." he said.
According to the report, plain text comprised 80 per cent of e-mail spam as image spam decreased to just 1.5 per cent.
