Protect yourself online or lose your money, consumers warned
Internet users should take adequate online security precautions or they risk losing their money to cyber crooks, consumer website fool.co.uk has stated.
According to the website, the weakest link when it comes to internet security is "almost always" the end user as "even the most secure encryption can be compromised by weak passwords and careless data security".
"Therefore, when you're shopping and banking online, always remember that you are a target for criminals who are keen to fleece you right down to your last penny!" warns the website.
As a result, the website has issued tips for safer online banking and shopping and among them is having a "decent anti-virus package" that should be updated several times a week.
Installing anti-spyware programmes and using a personal firewall are recommended and so are keeping the operating system and internet browser up to date.
Consumers are also advised to watch out for phishing attacks and the risk of ID theft, which can occur through spam emails so a spam filter is recommended.
