Protect computers, Britons urged
People must ensure their computer is fully protected with anti-virus software before they use online banking facilities, an expert has urged.
Mark Bowerman, spokesman for Apacs, the UK payments association, urged consumers to make sure their computer protection is fully up to date.
They should check they have both a firewall and anti-virus software installed, he urged.
It is also sensible to use anti-spyware programmes as well, Mr Bowerman continued.
Furthermore, consumers should avoid responding to unsolicited emails which purport to be from a bank, eBay or payment services such as PayPal, he asserted.
"Any unsolicited email that you receive and is asking you to divulge personal information or click on a link, you should be very wary of," the spokesman added.
This February is the UK's Office of Fair Trading's Scams Awareness Month and the body has highlighted that around three million Britons fall victim to cons each year, usually through the phone, by email, text message or though the post.
