Privacy on IM networks 'not consistent'
Internet users should be aware that privacy settings on various instant messaging (IM) applications differ, it has been reported.
Writing in an article on CNet, Declan McCullagh pointed out that it is more important than ever for consumers to make sure IM conversations are kept secure, in news which may be of interest to those looking to protect themselves from key loggers, malware and other internet security risks.
He said: "If you're using an open wireless connection, anyone who downloads free software like dSniff can intercept unencrypted IM communications streams."
However, in a study of ten IM applications - including Skype, AOL Instant Messenger and Google Talk - it was indicated that there are differences for how long providers of such services keep records of conversations.
It was also pointed out that the chat system provided by social networking website Facebook could be most susceptible to online threats as the site does not make use of encryption to protect users when they log in.
A recent study by iTnews revealed that the provision of IM applications within the workplace can help boost productivity as workers will be interrupted by their colleagues less often.
