Phishing scam targets US Federal Communications Commission
Consumers and businesses in the US have been warned to watch out for a new phishing scam exploiting the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).
The warning was issued by the FCC, which revealed that the new spam attack is impersonating its Fee Filer payment system in a bid to steal financial data.
In a one page statement, the body stated that it had received complaints that some organisations not related to the government may be using dodgy websites to misdirect people in need of submitting their regulatory fee payments.
"The complainants have alleged that these non-government websites are attempting to collect financial information. Because the allegations indicate potential fraudulent and illegal conduct," said the statement.
Regulatory fee payers were urged to make sure any internet payments were submitted directly to the commissions authorised website.
According to Vnunet, similar attacks have been directed at other federal agencies before and often target "a small number of high-value targets, rather than large numbers of random individuals of varying wealth".
