Phishing scam targets Barclays customers
Barclays bank has issued a warning to its customers to watch out for a phishing scam that is currently doing the rounds, it has emerged.
The institution has become the latest bank to be targeted by cyber crooks intent on exposing its customers to online threats and stealing their banking details.
According to the bank, cyber crooks have distributed an email titled restore your account, which encourages consumers to click on to a Barclays log-in site, which is a fake.
"We urge customers not to respond or click on these emails as they are phising scams. The fraudsters buy data from list companies and target consumers and businesses to get personal banking details," a spokesperson said.
The bank warns that following the instructions could leave users' personal banking details exposed and is urging customers to delete or forward the message to its internet security address.
According to figures from the Association for Payment Clearing Services losses related to cyber crime in online banking systems have risen by 185 per cent in the first six months of 2008.
