Phishing 'not an everlasting issue'
Phishing is not an unsolvable problem, the chief information security officer at PayPal has asserted.
Michael Barrett and his colleague Dan Levy have published a white paper containing guidelines on managing such fraudulent attacks which encourages those in the information security sector to work together in order to overcome the online threat.
Writing on the PayPal blog, Mr Barrett explained that while his organisation could protect consumers from financial loss by reimbursing them, the ideal situation would involve preventing such messages from reaching their inboxes in the first place.
He warned that a number of people are fatalistic when it comes to phishing and view it as an unsolvable issue.
The white paper highlights that more than 75 per cent of "phishmail" sent purports to be from PayPal or eBay.
It concedes that there is no one "silver bullet" which could end the security issue but urges firms to begin to work together towards a long-term solution.
