Phishing gang develops new weapon
A notorious gang of phishers has developed a new way of attacking victims.
The Rock Phish Gang, a group which first emerged in 2004, are well known for their skills in creating sophisticated phishing attacks which encourage people to surrender sensitive data only to suffer identity theft.
However now, the phishing sites associated with the cybercrooks have been edited so that they serve visitors with malware even without their downloading a program or surrendering information.
Another recent development in phishing practise is so-called whaling, where cybercriminals specifically target a high-powered individual such as a company boss or executive.
Recently, top US executives have been targeted with emails which purport to be official subpoenas, encouraging the recipient to visit a website for more information by clicking on a link within the message.
However, those who do click the link inadvertently begin downloading malware to their machines, allowing cyber criminals to spy on their activities and hack into their computers.
