Phishing emails 'rarely personalised'

A useful way of spotting a phishing email is whether or not it has a personalised greeting, an expert has remarked.

Financial commentator Charles Batchelor, writing for online resource MoneyExpert, stated that the online threat of phishing can result in identity theft and financial loss.

He explained that if an email purports to be from a trusted organisation but opens with a generic greeting such as "dear valued customer" then a consumer's suspicions should be aroused.

"Never log into your online bank account by clicking on a link to an email since you could end up on a fake website. Always open your web browser and type in the bank's address yourself," Mr Batchelor urged.

Last month, Apacs, the UK's payments association, warned that the number of phishing attempts is on the increase.

It warned that despite this, almost a third of people did not have anti-spyware software installed on their machine.
