Phishing attacks 'targeting smaller institutions'

Phishing attacks used to assume the identities of the larger banks but are now going after smaller organisations, it has been claimed.

Seth Truscott, writing for the Snoqualmie Valley Record, has warned Americans that there is no way to prevent cybercriminals copying any organisation's webpage in order to trick a victim into entering their details.

Often the crooks will send out an email which encourages the recipient to click on a link, he explained.

The link will navigate them to a site which appears to belong to an organisation they trust in order to trick the person into entering sensitive information.

Mr Truscott urged: "To avoid being taken in, financial institution customers should always be sceptical of emailed requests for their sensitive personal information, such as passwords or Pin numbers."

A high-profile spate of phishing has been seen in the US recently, with high-power executives being targeted with sophisticated and detailed fraudulent emails.

Such attacks have become known as whaling, highlighting the size of the potential prize if a criminal successfully steals the identity of such a businessman or woman.
